Casa Mosului - accommodation in Fagaras and nearby, Transfagarasan, Balea (Surrounding)

Transfagarasan - is one of the most spectacular roads in Romania. The road connects the historical region of Transylvania to Muntenia. The road was built to cross the Fagaras Mountains, the highest mountain range in the Romanian mountains, which is part of the Southern Carpathians.

The road climbs up to an altitude of nearly 2,000 meters; the step-up road uses coils to climb as a challenge for any car; due to the coil and road ramp, the treadmill is 40 km / h. The road is closed from the end of October until the month of June due to the snow covering the road.

This road has more tunnels and viaducts than any other road in Romania; near the highest point of climb, Balea Lake passes the road through the longest tunnel in Romania (almost 1,000 m).

Balea Lake is a glacier lake (formed in a glacier circus) located at an altitude of 2,040m in the Fagaras Mountains, Sibiu County.

The lake's dimensions are: 360 m in length, the area of ??46508 m and the depth of 11.35 m.

In 1932 Balea Lake and an area of ??about 180 hectares around the lake were declared a scientific reserve.

Lake Balea can be reached in summer by car, on Transfagarasan, and by car with cable car, at Balea Cascada. In the Fagaras Mountains there are the lakes of Capra, Small Podragu, Great Podragu, Avrig, Urlea, etc.

In 2006, the first ice hotel in Eastern Europe was built near Balea Lake.

The Balea waterfall , also called Urlatoarea Bālei, is located in the Fagaras Mountains between the peaks Moldoveanu and Negoiu, at over 1200 m altitude. It is the largest stepping waterfall in Romania, with a 60 m drop, and marks the lower stage of the Bālea glacier circle.

Access can be made from Transfagarasan to Bālea Cascada cabin and from there about 50 minutes down to the waterfall on a marked red dot route.
