Scarisoara Cave or Scarisoara Glacier housed the largest underground glacier in Romania. From here comes the name of the Glacier, and Scarisoara comes from the Scarisoara commune located 16 km below, which belonged administratively at the time it was baptized. It now belongs to the commune of Gârda de Sus, Alba County.
The entrance to the glacier from Scarisoara is through an impressive aven, whose mouth, with a diameter of 60m, opens in the forest on the edge of the plateau. A narrow trail dug into the rock and a few metal stairs anchored in the walls make it possible to lower the 48 m as it measures the depth of the trench. On its bottom is a thick layer of snow all year round. Here it enters the Great Hall through an impressive portal measuring 24 m wide and 17 m high.
Glacier under Zgurasti - In this cave was reported by R. Jeannel and EG Racovita (1929) an interesting meteorological phenomenon, the formation of fog in the beam of light rays that penetrate the mouth of the cave at lunchtime. The authors assume that this is a water condensation process around the forming ions, a process similar to that of the Wilson chambers. Another interesting feature is the presence of muscles on the floor of the room. These are Thamnium alopecurum L. and Oxyrrhynchium praelongum (Hedw.), Which grow under water and indicate as such the maximum level of lake growth.
